James William “Billy” Smith, the founder of what is now Smith Consulting Group, was born in Albany, Georgia. He began his career at an early age by working in his father's salvage business in Albany, Georgia. In 1961, he started Smith Surplus and Metal Company, Inc and specialized in buying and selling military surplus. This business expanded to include demolition projects for the United States government. Using commercial trucking companies to transport the military surplus became too expensive and unreliable. In order to overcome these obstacles, he bought his own trucks and became self sufficient with his company’s transportation needs. This was the beginning of both the consulting and transportation elements of the businesses, as we know it today. He died in 1984.
Billy P. Smith, the only son of James William “Billy” Smith, began working for his father during the afternoons following school. Billy P. Smith took over the family business following his father’s death in 1984. He is currently the President of Smith Transport and Logistics, Inc.; and the Managing Partner of Smith Consulting Group, LLC.
Billy P. Smith’s two sons, Bryan P. Smith and K. Blake Smith, have followed in their grandfather’s and father’s footsteps and have joined the family business. Bryan Smith and Blake Smith are both Project Managers in Smith Consulting Group, LLC.
